Public health leadership programme

PHLP is a residential leadership programme designed for public health leaders in New Zealand. The programme is funded by the Ministry of Health and has been developed following extensive consultation with the sector. PHLP builds leadership competencies identified as important for leaders in public health.

Three PHLP programmes will be offered each year.  Two programmes will be for ‘New Leaders’ and one for ‘Experienced Leaders’. The ‘Experienced Leaders’ programme is for experienced leaders wanting to inspire and refresh their leadership. The ‘New Leaders’ programme is for leaders looking to create a powerful foundation for their leadership development.

PHLP is not designed to teach public health. Participants are expected to have a good knowledge of public health principles including an understanding of social determinants of health, inequalities in health, and the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi in health.

Update on 2010 applications
Applications for the 2010 programmes closed on 16 April 2010.   There were 130 applications for 60 places. Due to the high numbers of experienced applicants the 2010 programmes will now be blended to accommodate both experienced and new leaders.

A review of the 2010 programmes will inform the construct of the 2011 programmes.  Applications for next year will open in February/March 2011.

Leadership programme for Maori in public health

The second of six leadership training programme for Māori is underway. The learning’s are then applied in a practical sense, both within each participant’s workplace, environment, as well as through an action project that relates back to Māori health.
