Report Summary Achieving Health for all People: Whakatutuki te oranga hauora mo nga tangata katoa: A framework for public health action for the New Zealand Health Strategy (Ministry of Health 2003) provides advice on how to gain traction in improving the health status of New Zealanders. The first of its five objectives is "Strengthen public health leadership at all levels and across all sectors." For this objective to be realised it is necessary to have strong and clear leadership around public health action across government agencies, District Health Boards, public health and other providers, local government and other sectors, and communities. Additionally, there is a need to strengthen whanau, hapu, iwi and Maori so that Maori can provide leadership for Maori public health action. The purpose of this review is to:
- Assess, against specific criteria, the existing leadership programmes and leadership related activities that are potentially relevant to the advancement of public health leadership in New Zealand
- Make recommendations regarding next steps. This report considers the context for public health leadership, identifies the existing leadership programmes and leadership-related activities, reviews them against defined criteria, and then draws conclusions and makes recommendations to the Public Health Group of the Ministry of Health for future actions.
