Career Pathways in Public Health:
Stage One Project Report (revised)

Summary of Report

This report, which was commissioned as part of the development of the Public Health Workforce Development Plan (Te Uru Kahikatea (TUK)), provides:
  1. A brief literature survey of international and local theoretical perspectives on the concept of career pathways both generally and within the public health sector.
  2. Research into the perceptions of career pathway needs in public health.
  3. Identification of entry points and associated training routes into public health practice.
  4. A career pathway schema for public health.

This report examines issues relating to career pathways relevant to the public health workforce.  An international literature review identifies definitions and a range of career pathway approaches.  It canvassed both national and international material that covered:
  • What is a career pathway?
  • Workforce planning and development and career pathways
  • Models of career pathways
  • Education, training and career pathways
  • Recruitment and retention issues

New Zealand perspectives are outlined from the literature, from interviews and focus groups, and from other work completed for the TUK project. A range of possible initiatives are described, and ‘pathways forward’ are outlined.
